I really like China with his extra-long sleeves Even though he is the oldest nation he looks like a little kid. I haven’t given the spotlight to China so this is his turn! However, the idea technically wasn’t his.
As I have mentioned before China had been busy with some resistance in WW2. Around 1942, Northern and Coastal China was occupied by Japan and I’ve gotta say he had it rough. Back then, Japan had a harsh policy to “kill all, loot all, and burn all”. If you were an Allied POW by the Germans your chance of survival was near 95% when if you were made POW by Japan your chance of survival was 70%. China couldn’t get any aid from the Allied Forces until he proved himself to be a fighter. That’s when the resistance came into being. They would do everything they could to burden the Japanese in similar ways the French did to the Germans (sabotaging coal mines, railroads, dams, phone lines etc.). They fought long and hard to preserve Shanghai and central China. Then, at last, China got some help.
Smuggling any kind of weaponry or suspicious explosives was near impossible for the resistance in China. Then the OSS (America’s CIA back then) had a brilliant idea. Food was permitted to be delivered in China so why not make it a disguise for explosives? HMX and/or TNT were grounded into a powder that looked remarkably like flour unless inspected very closely. So bags were loaded with 20% flour and 80% explosive powder. I believe that flour itself is somewhat explosive so that was an added bonus haha! This precarious mixture was given the name “Aunt Jemima” which was a popular brand of pancake mix back in the USA and still is!
Handheld grenade muffins were made by the dozens.
If the Japanese confiscated the flour, no big deal because they would make pancakes, biscuits, muffins, etc. out of it. The food would be edible although gritty and the person eating it wouldn’t become ill. Just offer him a cigarette and stay well away. I had the image of China offering Japan a ‘surprise’ b-day cake with large candles but that seemed out of character
Anyway, Aunt Jemima was a huge success. China was able to smuggle in about 15 tons of the stuff and Japan didn’t suspect a thing. The resistance was able to sabotage a bride on the Yangtze River using this flour.
